History
Important dates for a history of three centuries
The origin of the Works of Lovere dates back to the 18 th Century and is initially connected with the activities of a small workshop for the production of armaments and agricultural tools for the Republic of Venice. In the year
1856 the entrepreneur Giovanni Andrea Gregorini moves his activity from Vezza d’Oglio to Lovere bringing with him a number of skilled workers from the northern part of Val Camonica and from Val di Scalve.
In
1861 Gregorini developed the workshop of Lovere into a real iron and steel industrial plant, which thanks to the rich water resources, soon showed a remarkable growth.
Between
1875 and 1880 blast furnaces fed with wooden and carbon were set up for the production of pig iron and a Pernot furnace was installed for the production of iron and of molten steel. Furthermore, the workshop was equipped with pillar hammers for forging operations on ingots pouring out from the Pernot furnace.
All the facilities are still in place at the upper part of the plant close to the province road, whereas at the lake side there was only one large building hosting the stocks. A double railway track, on which freight cars were hauled by horses, runs from one to the other end of the plant to the lake, while the deliveries were made by long sailing boats.
1906 – the A. Gregorini Company starts the construction of a number of new facilities, that significantly increases the production potential of the plant..
1908 – the manufacturing capabilities of railway products were started up with intensive capital investments for a new steel mill, chemical laboratories and two rolling-mills for wheels and tyres, that will be characterizing the plant ever since.
1910 - 1916 - in addition to the railway production line a foundry, a forge and machining shops were added for the production of bullets for the military industry.
1916 – the Company changes the name to Società Anonima Franchi e Gregorini and the development program of the plant facilites was steadily pursued. During the 1st world war (1915-18) works were carried out in order to divert the river Tinazzo, which previously passed in the middle of the plant. A canal was inaugurated together with a purposely built long tunnel, conveying the water directly into the lake..
1930 - the company Società Anonima Franchi e Gregorini is taken over by ILVA and in the frame of this merger, the plant of Brescia, that belonged to the Group Franchi e Gregorini, is integrated into a new company. Merging the ILVA Group, the Lovere plant, becomes a production unit, specialized in quality and precision downstream operations to meet the industrial requirements of the Lombard area. The production of wheels and tyres for the State Railways demands for more investments in diversified facilities and equipments; at the same time the heavy foundry is expanded, new presses for the forging shop are installed and the machining shops are furnished with new high accuracy machine tools in order to comply with the upgraded production standards.
1961 – Italsider, the state owned company, takes over Lovere plant, which together with the factories in Trieste, Savona, S. Giovanni Valdarno and Novi Ligure constitutes a group of plants focused on high precision production. The modernizing process of the facilities and machineries continues and develops in connection with the increasing requirements by the State Railways, the major customer in the field of railway products. At the same pace also the foundry shop is further developed, discontinuing the mechanical moulding shop for small size castings and improving, over a period of some decades, the production of heavy steel castings in excess of 100 tons. 1982 – The Lovere plant becomes part of the state owned Group TERNI. 1987 - Lovere Plant evolves into an individual company under the name of Lovere Sidermeccanica. In this period of years a restructuring project is started up that will bring to deep changes of the plant, aimed at regaining competion in the international market place. 1990 – as a result of the reorganisation plans of the state owned steel industry, Lovere Sidermeccanica is acquired by the Lucchini Group and, in 1994, becomes a plant of Lucchini Siderurgica SpA..2002 - Lucchini Group reorganize its Companies and activities In Business Units and Lovere Plant becomes an individual company under the name of Lucchini Sidermeccanica Spa.
2005 – Severstal Group joins up Lucchini Group as a majority shareholder. 2007 – The Lucchini Family regained complete control of the Company. 2008 – The Company changed name into “ LUCCHINI RS” At the same time important investments were underway to create a new rolling mill line for railway wheels that will increase production capacity from 140,000 to a maximum of 240,000 wheels per year Lucchini RS operates today with the following production program: railway products (wheelsets, wheels, tyres, axles designed for railway, urban and suburban transport systems) – steel castings and forgings for the energy, industry, offshore applications, tool steels and forge ingots. The Company is today a leader with worldwide supplies and operates in China, with direct investments, with three wholly owned subsidiaries and a joint venture Company. .
